A note for newcomers who wonder about composting in snowy climates: I compost all year round. I just dump the food out in my compost pile in the snow. It will continue rotting and be ready for late spring gardening. No excuses!

If your compost is too hot it will cook/kill the worms. Just a thought from someone that has in fact, murdered afew worms.

A great lesson, Angela! Have you seen the movie “Dirt!”? It deals with the importance of giving back to the soil.

After watching this, I immediately put a request on Freecycle:) I don’t have much use for compost, but now I’m convinced it is still better then just trowing it out with the trash. Thanks! Love ya!

I have the composter that Angela used.
Someone on Freecycle gave it to me.
Placed it near my fathers house.
The one behind my place is a ditch I usually throw some grass clippings on it during the summer that helps. In the fall I put leaves on it.
Been composting all my life feel like I am wasting stuff when I throw it in regular garbage to go to a toxic landfill.

I have 6 compost bins! They do better when cardboard/newspaper is added, they always have stacks more worms in them.

I use 3 kitchen caddies, they are actually 25 litre fermentation buckets. It takes me 2 days to fill one. 5 sheets of crumpled newspaper go in the bottom before adding anything else.

My cardboard trays and boxes get composted as well.

The main thing to remember is to mix dry/wet or green/brown (eg cardboard or paper). When you do this it makes a huge difference to the compost.

@Necrowitch . Dig a hole, cover fill it with compost – even coconut leftovers, top it off with soil, then put your plants in that!

Use Compost Activator / Accelerator, it’s a powder that contains the microorganisms required to compost stuff, it speeds it up 10x, also throw in some worms and you’ll get some Great quality worm castings. (you can get worms from you’re local fishing supply store) enjoy ;-)

You can dry them out then make bio-char out of it to super boost your soil. You’ll have to google it as this comment box does not accept the links I was going to include! There are also some great youtube videos.
